Regulated Gaming in Alberta

PlayAlberta is the province’s regulated online platform, operated under the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission. It went live in 2020 and gives eligible residents access to online slots, table games, live dealer table games, instant-win games, sports betting and lottery products. This monopoly ended when the market opened to licensed private operators on July 13, 2026. PlayAlberta was the sole regulated online gambling site in the province until private operators launched on July 13, 2026.

The regulated online gambling market in Alberta opened to private operators on July 13, 2026.

Revenue generated through the platform goes directly into the Government of Alberta’s General Revenue Fund, helping fund community services and public programs. The AGLC oversees both online gambling and land-based casinos across Alberta, with a focus on player safeguards and responsible gambling standards.

What You Can Play

Most of the library is slot titles - from classic three-reel setups to modern video games with bonus features and progressive jackpots. Table players have access to several blackjack formats, multiple roulette styles and baccarat. For bettors, the sportsbook covers hockey, football, basketball, baseball and soccer with pre-game markets, parlays and live in-play wagering.

Lottery products are integrated into the same account, so you can purchase tickets for provincial and national draws, check winning numbers and create subscriptions. PlayAlberta runs directly in your desktop or mobile browser, so there is no requirement to download an app. Android users who prefer an app can install the Play Alberta application through the Google Play Store.

Setting Up Your Account

To register, we ask for standard information: your full name, date of birth, residential address and contact details. Age and residency checks are completed during signup, and you will be prompted to upload a government-issued ID such as a driver’s license, passport or provincial card. Verification is usually wrapped up within 24 to 48 hours in line with industry practice.

After your account is confirmed, you manage everything from a single dashboard. You can:

  1. Set or change your deposit limits.
  2. Configure session timers.
  3. Review transaction history and account activity.

Your current balance, any active bonuses and recent play are all displayed in one place. Reality check messages appear during play sessions to show how long you have been active and how much you have wagered, giving you a natural pause to step away or continue with a clear view.

Deposits and Withdrawals

Available deposit methods can vary by account and payment provider, and should be checked in the cashier area. Deposits are processed instantly on most methods. Minimum and maximum transaction amounts depend on the payment method you choose.

Cash-outs go through an internal security review before any money is released. We confirm that the account holder is the same person requesting the withdrawal and that any wagering requirements tied to bonuses are met. Depending on the payment route, processing timelines can vary. Accounts that have been fully verified generally qualify for higher withdrawal limits.

Regulated Gaming Platform

PlayAlberta operates under the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission oversight since 2020. The platform served as the province’s only regulated online casino until the private market launched on July 13, 2026.

  • Online slots, table games and sports betting
  • Revenue returns to fund community services
  • Minimum age requirement of 18 years (one year lower than Ontario’s 19)
  • Must be physically located within Alberta borders

The platform runs directly in desktop and mobile browsers without requiring downloads. Android users can access the dedicated Play Alberta application through the Google Play Store.

Land-Based Venues Across the Province

Alongside the online platform, Alberta has roughly two dozen casino facilities operating under AGLC regulation. River Cree Resort and Casino in Enoch is one of the largest sites in the province, combining a gaming floor with hotel accommodation, entertainment, and several dining options. Calgary is home to several well-known properties including Elbow River Casino, Cowboys Casino, Century Casino Calgary, Grey Eagle Resort and Deerfoot Inn and Casino.

First Nations casinos such as Stony Nakoda Casino and Eagle River Casino support Indigenous economic development while operating under the same regulatory structure. Across these venues you will find slot machines, table games and, in many cases, dedicated poker rooms, with on-site staff trained to support responsible gambling and answer questions.

Private Market Launch 2026

Alberta opened its online gambling market to private operators on July 13, 2026 (market launch date), following a structure similar to the Ontario model. Alberta’s iGaming framework is tied to Bill 48, the iGaming Act, which created the legal structure for private online gaming and is already in effect. The framework introduces a structured licensing model similar to Ontario’s approach. 28 operators were approved as of May 2026, with up to 43 registered in total, and confirmed day-one brands include BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, theScore Bet, BetRivers, PointsBet Canada, Betway, and BET99. BetMGM is a confirmed day-one operator as of July 13, 2026.

Caesars-branded platforms (including three Caesars platforms) are confirmed day-one operators as of July 13, 2026. Any private operator in the provincial framework must hold an Alberta license, meet responsible gambling obligations and contribute to provincial revenues. Additional operators are expected to enter the market throughout the second half of 2026, with extensions to October 13, 2026 possible.

Responsible Gambling Tools

In line with established standards, we provide several tools to help you manage your play:

  1. Deposit limits for daily, weekly or monthly caps.
  2. Session reminders after a set time at the tables or slots.
  3. Self-exclusion options, temporary or permanent, that lock access to your account.

Self-exclusion tools are part of the regulated framework and can be used to limit access where supported. You can also set loss limits so that once a threshold is reached, additional spending is blocked for that period. The new framework emphasizes player protection tools such as system-wide self-exclusion and financial and time-based limits. The AGLC offers further support for problem gambling, including counseling referrals, educational material and clear information on key warning signs. Similar resources are available for family members who are affected.

When configuring limits for the first time, we recommend starting conservatively. It is straightforward to raise a limit later if needed, but users often find it harder to lower a limit once they are deep into a playing routine.

Mobile Access

You can access Alberta Casino content on mobile without installing extra software. The site runs smoothly in both iOS and Android browsers, with games optimized for smaller displays, touch controls and changes in screen orientation. Menus collapse on mobile to make one-handed navigation easier.

For stable performance, we recommend Apple devices running iOS 12.0 or later and Android phones on version 8.0 or newer, along with a reliable 3G connection or better. Your account balance, game history and preferences sync across desktop and mobile under the same login, so you can start playing on one device and continue on another without losing progress.

Winners Edge Loyalty Program

Winners Edge is a loyalty program for regular players at participating land-based casinos in Alberta. Points accumulate on eligible slots or table games, and those points may be exchanged for free play credits, dining vouchers, or invitations to on-site events. To enroll, you present valid government-issued ID at the player services desk of a participating casino.

The program runs through several tiers - basic, silver, gold and platinum - based on how many points you earn in a year. Higher tiers unlock benefits such as priority lines at customer service, complimentary or discounted hotel stays and access to select tournaments. You can check your point balance and redeem rewards using kiosks at participating properties. Winners Edge operates independently from the online PlayAlberta platform, so promotions and rewards are not shared between the two systems.
